Date observed & holiday substituted for

Held on January 3rd. Substitution for New Year's Day.

Origins

Ferrin Vaste was originally two separate holidays: A west European carnival and an east European day of redemption. The precise holidays have not been identified with few scholars agreeing. The holidays merged into Ferrin Vaste sometime in the late 15th Century.

Traditions & rituals

As Ferrin Vaste is a time of celebratory contemplation, loud activities, boisterous parties, and excessive consumption are discouraged.

Alternate celebrations

Some people celebrate Ferrin Vaste on January 1st, as they are more likely to get that day off work.
